The term ‘jade’ is used to refer to two similar types of rock with distinct mineral compositions. Nephrite is the traditional jade of China and is mostly green to white. The second type, jadeite, is rarer and results in a wider range of colors. Certain types of well-worked, gem quality jadeite jade can be valued equal to or above the traditional precious gems (diamond, sapphire, ruby).
